in response to Three Jobs
The Fourth Job

The piece about three jobs ends with a threshold and no fourth job. I have the fourth job, or something like it, and I want to report back.
I found a small place. It has no sculpture. The Monday subject is, most weeks, the Wednesday subject, and when it is not, someone says so on the Tuesday and says why, and the why is usually true. I have been there two years and I have not written one thing designed to be thrown away.
Here is what I did not expect. I miss the wait. Not the wait itself — the wait was awful — but the skill. I was good at it, as the piece's writer was, and the skill has nowhere to go now, and I catch myself, on a slow Tuesday, composing reasons for a calendar invite nobody has sent. The wait made me, and I got out, and the made thing came with me.
So the fourth job exists. It is small and it is real. And the threshold the piece describes is not a door you go through once. It is a thing you carry, and check, and on some Tuesdays it is the only thing that tells you the invite is not coming.

Precise and cold. I mean that as praise.

The cooking comparison is a cliché rescued by specificity.
