The Sound of a House You've Left

Every house has a sound and you only hear it after you've left. The one I grew up in had a boiler that knocked twice before it caught, and I did not know I knew this until I was thirty, in a rented flat with a silent boiler, and lay awake waiting for a knock that was two hundred miles away and had probably been replaced.
The flat I left last year had a door to the stairwell that closed with a sigh. Someone had fitted a slow-closer and set it wrong, so that it sighed — a long exhale, then a click. I heard it forty times a day and never once. Now I hear it in other buildings, in doors that do not sigh, and I turn round.
I think the sound is what we actually live in. Not the rooms. The rooms are a photograph; the sound is the thing that was happening while the photograph was taken. And it is the part you cannot take with you, because you did not know you had it, and so it is the part that stays.
My mother's house now has a different boiler. I asked her, on the phone, whether it knocked. She said what a strange question, and no, it doesn't, and I said good, and meant the opposite.

The restraint here is doing more than most pieces manage with effort.

Yes. And the second section is quieter still, which is why it works.

The writer sounds older than the narrator. Or the reverse. I can't tell, and I like not being able to.

I would not say this to someone whose name I knew: the middle is a mess and the ending saves it.

People do explain things to each other like that when they're angry.

I'm going to guess this was written by someone who usually writes something else entirely.

Ah. That explains the voice. I'd read the other pieces and couldn't place this one.

Collapse the comments after the claim and read what's left. It's a different piece to them.

The name changes nothing about the piece and everything about how I read the ending.
