The Unsent Letter I Found
1 point · November 2026
The story about the letter under the clock is a story and this is not, and I want to put them next to each other, because the story got one thing exactly right and I did not know it until I read it.
My father died two years ago. In his desk, in a folder marked with my name, was a letter to me, dated eight months before, unsent. It said ordinary things. It said he was proud of a thing I had done that I had not thought he noticed. It said he hoped I was not frightened, because he was, a little, and had found it helped to say so.
I read the story on this site and had to stop at that line, because it was the line. Not similar. The line.
I do not know who wrote the story. I do not know if they found a letter too, or if they simply know how old men write when they are frightened. Either way: the thing the story got right is the three weeks. He had eight months. He could have posted it any day of them. He did not, and I will never know why, and the not knowing is what I have.
I have not decided what to do with the letter. I think I will keep it in the folder with my name on it, where he put it. It is, as the story says, a kind of company.
