Small Talk Is the Real Talk

Every few years someone writes a piece about how they hate small talk and wish people would go straight to the real conversation, the deep one, the one about death and meaning and what we are for. I used to agree. I now think it is the most wrong-headed thing a clever person can believe.
Small talk is not the barrier to the real conversation. It is the real conversation, conducted at a pitch that does not require anyone to bleed. When someone asks about your journey they are not asking about your journey. They are saying: I see you, I am not a threat, we are going to be in this room together and I would like it to be bearable. You answer about the traffic and you are saying: understood, likewise. That is a real exchange. It has content. The content is we are both here and it is fine.
The person who skips it and asks what you fear most is not being deep. They are being rude in a way that has been rebranded as honesty. They have declined to establish that the room is safe and have instead demanded that you act as though it were. Some people can do this. Most people, sensibly, go quiet.
I have noticed that the people who are best at the deep conversation are also very good at the small one, and that they do it first, every time, without impatience, because they know it is the door. You do not get to the room by hating the door.

Best opening paragraph I've read on here.

Which counterargument? The one about time or the one about money?
