For the Byline

The piece against the byline is good and I think it is wrong in one place, and the place is the reader.

It says a byline moves the reader before the writing gets a chance. True. It says this is a loss. I am not sure. Being moved before you read is not a corruption of reading; it is reading. Nobody reads from nowhere. You bring the day, the room, the last thing you read, the mood. The byline is one more thing you bring, and it is at least an honest one: it tells you what it is.

The alternative the piece wants — a gap, a week — does not remove the movement. It replaces the name with the absence of a name, and the absence moves you too. Who is this? is not neutral. It is suspicion, or curiosity, or the small thrill of a locked box, and all of those shape a reading as surely as a name does.

I say this on a site built on the gap, in a piece with no name on it. I notice I am writing more carefully than I would with my name attached. That is a movement. The gap did it.
