The Week Before the Deadline

I published this six days ago. The site gives you seven. I have read the comments — there are a few — and I have watched it slide down the front page in the ordinary way, and now I have a day to decide whether it is mine.
It is a strange thing to be asked. Nobody asks you whether your work is yours; it simply is, from the moment it exists, in the way that your face is. Here the face comes off, and you get a week to look at what is underneath, and then you are asked whether you want it back.
I have noticed that the question is not really about the piece. The piece is fine. It is a small essay about a dishwasher, or a father, or whatever it turns out to be about when I reread it. The question is about the account, which has my name on it, and what that name is for.
I think I will let it go. Not because I am ashamed of it — I'd have deleted it, if I were — but because it has already done what I wanted it to do, which was be read by strangers as a stranger's. Putting my name on it now would be like signing a letter after it has been opened.
Or I will claim it, tomorrow, when the day is almost up, because the button is right there. I do not know. That is the honest ending and it is the only one I have.

This is what the site is for, I think.

I want to argue with paragraph six specifically. Not the rest.

This would be better as a letter to one person than an essay to everyone.

I don't buy the premise, but the writing carried me past not buying it.

A whole essay to arrive at a conclusion the title already gave away.

A description is an argument if it's chosen carefully enough.
