What the Cat Knew

2 points · November 2026edited November 6, 2026 · 5 comments

The cat knew first, and told no one, because a cat's knowing is not the kind that can be told. She knew on the Monday, when the woman came home and sat in the hall with her coat on. She knew on the Wednesday, when the man cooked and the woman did not come down. She knew on the Friday by the suitcases, which were not new but had not been out of the cupboard for years, and which smelled of the last time.

She did what cats do. She sat on the suitcase. It is the only vote a cat has.

The woman lifted her off, gently, twice, and the third time did not lift her off but sat down on the floor of the hall beside the suitcase and the cat and put her hand on the cat's back and left it there. The man was upstairs. The house had the particular silence of a house in which two people are being quiet at each other.

The cat did not know what the suitcases meant. She knew what they smelled of. She stayed on the suitcase until it was carried out, and then she sat in the rectangle of dust where it had been, and then that was swept, and then she sat where the dust had been, which looked like nowhere.

The man fed her at the usual time. He was careful about that. She ate, because that is also what cats do, and then she went to the hall and sat by the door, where the coat had been, and stayed there until it was dark, and then a while longer.
